Peter Vale

Cardiovascular Physician and Vascular Disease Specialist


Associate Professor Peter Vale is a vascular disease specialist. He is an interventional vascular physician and cardiologist specialising in the treatment of vascular diseases (involving both arteries and veins) and a wide range of cardiac disorders.

Associate Professor Vale has clinical appointments at Mater Hospital, North Sydney, Macquarie University Hospital,  and St Vincent's Private Hospital, Darlinghurst,  

Associate Professor Vale has consulting rooms at  Sydney Endovascular Specialists in Crows Nest, Pacific Cardiovascular Associates at Mater Clinic in North Sydney, Macquarie University Clinic at Macquarie University Hospital, Northern Beaches Vascular in Mona Vale, St Vincent's Clinic in Darlinghurst, and Mudgee Vascular at Mudgee Medical Centre, Mudgee.

Peter Vale is Associate Professor of Medicine at University of Notre Dame Australia and The Australian School of Advanced Medicine at Macquarie University. He is head of Mater Subschool of Medicine of University of Notre Dame Australia Sydney School of Medicine. He is a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, a fellow of The Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand and a fellow of the American College of Cardiology. He is Chairperson of Cardiovascular Services at Mater Hospital Sydney. He is vice-president of the ANZ chapter of the International Union of Angiology.

Associate Professor Vale graduated from University of New South Wales School of Medicine in 1986, completed residency at St Vincent’s Hospital, Sydney and gained his fellowship with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in Vascular Medicine, Cardiology and General Medicine. He undertook post-fellowship training in interventional cardiovascular medicine at Tuft’s University School of Medicine and St Elizabeth’s Medical Centre, Boston, USA, gaining expertise in the endovascular (non-surgical interventional) management of peripheral arterial disease. He has numerous publications in leading peer-reviewed journals and written multiple book chapters. He is an invited speaker on the subject of peripheral arterial disease and venous thromboembolism. He is currently involved in both National and New South Wales–based committees devoted to improving the level of understanding, diagnosis, and treatment of venous thromboembolism.

His main area of practice involves the endovascular management (angioplasty and stenting) of peripheral arterial disease, carotid disease and aortic aneurysms, the diagnosis and management of cardiac disorders and atherosclerotic risk factors, the management of venous thromboembolism, and the peri-operative medical manage of surgical patients.

Associate Professor Peter Vales areas of special interest and expertise include:

  • Peripheral arterial disease including carotid artery disease and subclavian disease
  • Critical limb ischaemic and lower limb ulceration
  • Vascular diagnosis (ultrasound and angiography)
  • Percutaneous revascularisation of peripheral arteries including renal artery stenosis, carotid stenosis, subclavian stenosis, haemodialysis fistulae

  • Venous thromboembolism (deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism)
  • Vasculitis, connective tissue disorders and immunologically-medicated vascular disorders
